Surrealism – Painting 'Chance and Change' with Professional Art Teacher Lynda Mapplebeck

CLASS CANCELLED.

Please send us your email address and you will be put on Lynda's list for her next block of classes.

This painting course explores the use of random mark making processes and would be ideal to help you loosen up. Each session will result in 2-3 finished art works .

It would therefore not require any previous experience. More experienced artists would be stimulated to apply new painting techniques to their own art practise.

A more detailed explanation of the six sessions are as follows:

  1. Movement of Paint from a Vertical Height
    Soufflage – blowing the paint
  2. Decalcomania – transferring paint from one surface to another
  3. Eclaboussure – ‘bombing’ the paint with water
  4. Frottage – rubbing into the paint over texture
Grattage – scraping and scratching the paint – ‘scgraffito'
  5. Encaustic – working with wax crayons
  6. Collage – pasting found images and adding paint

Introduction to Surrealism in art history and the role of chance in the making of art.

Movement of Paint from a Vertical Height
Firstly, 2-3 paper surfaces are prepared with gesso and with underpainting in acrylics. Pourable acrylic paint is pooled at one end of a sheet of paper. The paper is then tipped up so that the paint moves at random.

Soufflage
Involves blowing the pourable paint with a straw or hair drier. Insect-like shapes can appear.
