Summer is the time to process and preserve nature’s bounty. In this class we will make bread and butter pickles, strawberry jam and a quick refrigerator jam using chia seeds.

I will also talk you through the way to preserving whole fruit, pickle vegetables and make relishes and chutneys. All participants will go home with at least two jars of preserves.

Elise Hoverd

My name is Elise. I have lived here on the stunning Kapiti Coast for seven years along with my husband and three children. We have the family ethos of good food, good company and sharing what we have with others.

I’m a classic Kiwi favourite baker with a few forays into more technical or showy baking. I can find numerous ways to use up that fruit languishing in the fruit bowl – mostly apples and a few brown bananas in our house. Most of my family baking is budget friendly and economical with a few treats thrown in.

I aim for making dinners that are nutritious and filling but not budget blowing. I can find ten ways to convince a 6 year old to try broccoli. I am great believer in repurposing leftovers into new meals and taking humble basic ingredients and making something tasty and nutritious.

I am a big preserver – we no longer buy canned tomatoes. canned fruit, jam or chutneys. I pickle my own onions and gherkins, I make quite a few different chutneys, and many jams. I make use of any fruit or vegetable I can get my hands on – either grown in our own garden and orchard, by bartering or taking that which is given away free.

I look forward to offering Kapiti Summer School a range of cooking classes to suit everyone.

"If I love you I will feed you, if you need love I will feed you."
