Everything you ever wanted to know about oil painting.  Gerda Smit’s workshops are a testament to her approachable, giving nature, and hands-on teaching style of 23 years. Students will leave this workshop excited; ready to experiment more on their own and above all, pointed toward meaningful, personal, artistic growth. The workshop will include individual painting time, personalized instruction aimed to promote your progress.

You will learn all you ever wanted to know about oil painting. We will explore oil painting techniques, learn what the best paint is to use, when to varnish, best brushes, pallet knives, easy quick cleaning of brushes, what to paint on and mediums lean or fat. Bring all your questions.
My teaching method is to provide students with one-on-one attention and to teach in small group so that students receive individual attention. By giving each student personal tuition, it will enable me to assist and guide the student in areas that they want to explore and or have difficulty learning in, as well as to provide constructive feedback.

Painting from photos or real life.

My teaching method is to coach.

I plan lessons around your skill level, interests or tutoring needs.

I give art lessons to students of all abilities. I'll help you by listening to what you want to achieve and explaining key concepts clearly. Don't worry if you're just starting out or lack confidence - I'm here to help you make real breakthroughs and have lots of fun doing it.

Gerda Smit
I went from watercolour classes to oil painting.

About 22 years ago I started painting professionally. Since then I have done a Hon. Diploma in painting.

Today I start most paintings in mixed media and finish it with oil paint.

Teaching painting to all ages just happened and I love it to see how people grow in their work.

My work has sold all over the world. I have exhibited in the NZ Art Show (5x single wall), Academy of Fine Arts, Pataka and some smaller exhibitions.
My paintings are the breath of my soul. In every brush stroke you will find me scalp with a brush whimsically, straight from the heart uplifting life’s images flowing from the paintbrush. I have been a painting tutor in Tawa for 16 years and take private students and classes at Tawa Collage.
I celebrate life
Make people smile
My marks are bold and colourful I paint mostly still life
Each has its own story …….

I am blessed with a talent to paint and a gift to encourage. My studio is filled with watercolour, acrylic, ink and oil paint. That is my happy place.
